The one-sentence definition, without comparison or superlative.
What it is
livedot is the following half of a race. A rider or runner shares a link or a profile and anyone can watch their dot move along the course, with distance covered, current speed and a finish time that updates as they go. The course is coloured by what is coming at them — wind for riders, heat for runners — using the same forecast the apps use. If a goal is set it runs alongside as a ghost, so a follower sees ahead or behind to the minute, and can send a tap on the back that the athlete feels mid-race. It opens in any browser with no account and nothing installed.
The operating frustration that existed before the product.
The problem we encountered
Planning tools serve the person doing the event. Nobody is served by them on the day except the athlete, and the people who care most are the ones who cannot see anything. “I’m running on Sunday” is always followed by “how do I follow you?”, and the honest answer has been a race organiser’s tracker that covers a few famous events, or nothing at all.
The founder’s account, in their own words.
Why we built it
“Two products sharing one live-tracking spine turned out to have built a third thing. The tracking layer was infrastructure for Windline and RunFast, both of which serve a participant preparing for an event. The audience it actually created was different — the people watching — and that audience has no product of its own anywhere. So the layer was given a domain, a name and a front door.”
How the first problem expanded into the current product.
What the product became
- A followable identity: a profile or a shared link, opened in any browser with no account and nothing to install.
- A dot with meaning attached — distance covered, speed, and a finish time that moves as the athlete does.
- The course coloured by conditions, wind for riders and heat for runners, from the same forecast the sibling apps run on.
- A goal shown as a ghost alongside the athlete, so a follower reads ahead or behind to the minute.
- Taps on the back, counted and felt by the athlete during the event.
- Honest signal handling: a lost phone signal is stated plainly rather than faked, and the track fills in when it returns.
Genuine dogfooding. Deployed uses only.
How we use it ourselves
- Windline and RunFast both feed livedot. It is the live-tracking spine they already shared, given its own front door rather than rebuilt. Deployed
- Two demo races run continuously — Comrades on RunFast and the Coast Classic on Windline — so the product is always showing live behaviour rather than a recording. Deployed
